Air brakes feel complicated at first because they combine mechanical parts, air pressure, dash gauges, warning systems, and inspection steps. But for the CDL exam, Section 5 of the official CDL Manual is built around a few repeatable ideas: know the parts, know the PSI numbers, and know how to test the system before you move the truck.

What the air brake system actually does
An air brake system uses compressed air to apply the service brakes and uses powerful springs to apply the parking/emergency brakes when air pressure is removed.
That design matters. Hydraulic brakes need fluid pressure to stop. Air brakes need air pressure to release certain brakes and controlled air pressure to apply others. That is why the system has gauges, warning lights, storage tanks, drains, a compressor, a governor, and spring brakes.

A common test trap is confusing the supply pressure gauge with the application pressure gauge. The supply gauge tells you how much air is in the tanks. The application gauge, if the truck has one, shows how much pressure you are applying with the brake pedal.
The foundation brake: where air becomes stopping power
At each wheel, the air system has to turn pressure into mechanical movement. On many trucks, that happens through an S-cam brake.
Here is the basic sequence:
- You press the brake pedal.
- Air enters the brake chamber.
- The air pushes the push rod outward.
- The push rod moves the slack adjuster.
- The slack adjuster turns the camshaft.
- The S-cam spreads the brake shoes.
- The brake linings press against the drum and slow the wheel.

The PSI numbers CDL students must memorize
Air brakes are one of the most number-heavy parts of the CDL exam. These numbers show up in written questions and in the in-cab air brake check.

Dual air brake systems
Modern CDL vehicles use dual air brake systems. That means there are two separate air systems controlled by one set of controls. If one system fails, the other may still provide limited braking ability.
Before driving a vehicle with a dual air system, allow pressure to build to at least 100 PSI in both systems. On the dash, you may see two separate air gauges, or one gauge with two needles for primary and secondary pressure.
For inspection, treat dual systems seriously. If one side is not building pressure, if pressure drops too quickly, or if the warning system fails, the vehicle is not ready for the road.
The air brake inspection sequence
The CDL air brake check is not something to improvise. It is a sequence. Practice it the same way every time.
A typical in-cab air brake check includes:
- Build air pressure to normal operating range.
- Check governor cut-out around 125 PSI.
- Fan the brakes down and confirm governor cut-in around 100 PSI.
- Turn the engine off and release the parking brakes if required by your state procedure.
- Check air leakage rate by watching the gauges for one minute.
- Apply the service brake and check that pressure loss stays within limits.
- Fan the brakes down until the low air warning activates before 60 PSI.
- Continue fanning down until the parking brake valves pop out in the 20–45 PSI range.
- Rebuild pressure and test the parking brake.
- Move forward slowly and test the service brake.
Combination vehicles have stricter applied leakage limits than single vehicles. Many CDL programs teach combination drivers to remember less than 4 PSI in one minute with the service brake applied. Always follow your state CDL Manual and examiner instructions for the exact test wording.

How to use air brakes on the road
For normal stops, apply steady pressure and bring the vehicle to a smooth stop. Do not stab at the pedal during ordinary braking. If you are driving a manual transmission, do not push the clutch in too early; wait until engine RPM is near idle so you keep better control.
With ABS, brake normally. ABS is designed to help you maintain steering control during hard braking. If ABS fails, you still have normal braking, but you do not have the anti-lock function.
For emergency braking, the CDL Manual describes controlled braking and stab braking:

On long or steep downgrades, use proper braking technique to prevent brake fade. Choose a safe speed, apply the brakes until you are about 5 mph below that speed, then release and let the vehicle come back up to the safe speed before reapplying. This gives the brakes time to cool.
What low air pressure means
If the low air warning comes on while driving, treat it as an emergency. It usually means the system is losing air or the compressor is not keeping up. Get off the road safely and stop.
If pressure keeps dropping, the spring brakes will apply automatically. That can stop the truck abruptly and put you in a dangerous position if you ignored the warning.
Remember: Spring brakes are held back by air pressure. When that air is removed, the springs apply the brakes. That is why the parking brake works even if air pressure bleeds off after the truck is parked.
Parking brake and tractor protection basics
When you park, pull the yellow parking brake control to set the tractor spring brakes. On combination vehicles, the red trailer air supply control handles the trailer supply and emergency function.
